Between or Among?

between or among?

You use ‘between’ for a specific location.

I sit between Peter and John.

The path runs between an avenue of pine trees.

‘Among’ is used when the location is general.

My desk is among several others.

I love to get out to the park and walk among the

trees.

You use ‘between’ when you specify who or which.

I can chose between Sydney University, UTS or

Macquarie.

There is an agreement between Peter, John and

Mary.

But when you generalize, you say ‘among’.

I can chose among several universities.

There is an agreement among staff.
